Italian Sausage Pizza Recipe


A good cast iron skillet can vì just about anything–including serving up the best homemade pizza you’ll ever taste! This Cast Iron SkilletSausage Pizza takes almost no time to lớn make and is out-of-this-world good. A crispy golden crust topped with savory sausage crumbles and yummy slivers of red onion, mushrooms, and green pepper cooks up in less than 15 minutes! Rounding out the dish are bubbles of hot, melted mozzarella cheese seasoned with crushed red pepper and fresh basil. I could eat this forever.

Homemade pizza can be a chore khổng lồ make. I’ve been scared off of it for years, intimidated by the frequent gọi for a “pizza stone” (what the heck is that?) & temperatures high enough khổng lồ burn down the house. Plus, who has time to lớn make dough? and isn’t pizza unhealthy?

Enter the cast iron skillet. The workhorse of the kitchen. It eliminates the need for a pizza stone and/or a pizza oven. & with a good chất lượng prepared dough jarred marinara, it only takes a few fresh ingredients khổng lồ assemble a swoon-worthy, healthy-ish pizza in no time at all. This recipe is adapted from one I found on the Bon Appetit website, one of my all time favorite resources.

The BEST cast-iron skillet out there is the Staub Cast-Iron. I’ve had it for years and done hardly anything to lớn keep it up, yet it’s still in perfect condition. It’s pricy, but takes the place of 5 pans. It’s nearly all you need outside of a Dutch Oven.

For a less expensive option, the Lodge Cast-Iron is also great. Requires a little bit more upkeep, but a great alternative.

How lớn make Cast Iron Skillet-Sausage Pizza


First, stretch out the prepared pizza dough into a roughly 10-inch circle. You don’t have lớn use all the dough! Your dough should be relatively thin, as it will rise.

Try to find the kind of dough that comes packaged in a ball in the refrigerated section of the grocery. Trader Joe’s has the best one, and Whole Foods has a nice brand, too. The kind that comes in a Pillsbury tube can be used in a pinch, but is not as easy to work with. Make sure the dough is at room temperature or it will spring back và refuse to lớn stay in place!

Second, saute the sausage in a tablespoon of oil in the cast iron skillet. Remove the sausage lớn a plate & insert the dough into the hot, oiled skillet. (It will start khổng lồ cook in the residual heat và this is what you want!)

Third, add cheese, veggie toppings, & lastly the crumbled sausage and place in oven for 10-14 minutes.

That’s it!

Once you get the hang of it, there are probably a zillion variations on this theme. I’m thinking bacon, pepperoni, rotisserie chicken, maybe some spinach or arugula, black olives, artichoke slivers . . . You get the picture! Marion adds a bit of her favorite goat cheese for a fabulous punch of extra-cheesey flavor.

Directions Step 1 Place oven rack in top-most position of oven and preheat lớn 475°. Step 2 Place dough on a work surface & coat with with 1 tbsp. Oil, turning with your hands. Stretch dough out to a 10″ round, trying to lớn leave a rim at the edges. Don’t obsess. Sprinkle with some salt và cover loosely with plastic wrap. Step 3 Heat 1 tbsp. Oil in a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat và saute sausage, crumbling it with a wooden spoon, about 5–8 minutes. Transfer sausage to a small bowl. Step 4 Remove skillet from heat & carefully lay dough inside. Don’t wipe out the skillet, you want the hot oil surface to lớn start cooking the dough. Spoon marinara sauce over vị trí cao nhất of dough. Step 5 Sprinkle in grated mozzarella, then mushrooms, diced pepper, và sliced garlic. Sprinkle the veggies with a bit of kosher salt. Add sausage last. Drizzle with 2 Tbsp. Oil. Peek underneath the crust—the bottom should be light golden brown from the residual heat in the skillet. If it’s not, set skillet over medium-low heat on stove and cook until crust is a light gold, about 2 minutes. Step 6 Transfer skillet to oven & bake pizza until crust is golden brown around the edges & cheese is browned in spots & bubbling all over, 10–14 minutes.
